In Defense of Colorful Shoes

Lately I’ve been feeling like I need to add some color to the sea of brown and black that is my shoe closet. Keeping things simple is always okay, but my feet were feeling like they needed somethin’ a lil different soon. And then (absolutely adorable) Jeffrey Campbell’s “Pony Up” came just in time.

My next problem was what do I wear green shoes with?? I worried about what colors would work, what outfits would match, and then it hit me… don’t match! Make the shoes a wonderful shining beacon of the center of attention.

With an amazing shoe like this, you definitely don’t want to distract from them anyway. So I worked on the art of dressing around the shoe, something we’ve discussed before. Keep the rest of the outfit simple and clean, but also structured. I also practiced werkin’ the oh-so-hot-right-now monochromatic look, in my current favorite: complimentary shades of brown and tan. Throw on some Viv & Ingrid posts, a Minoux necklace and a fabulous Christopher Kon bag, and you’re ready to go!

Get the Essentials: Bag Shopping 101

Finding the perfect “pocketbook” as my Dad calls it can be a trying and exciting event in any lady’s life. For most of us the purse is an essential wardrobe piece. It is the item that keeps all of our worldly possessions while we are on the go. Finding the perfect handbag is a very personal and individual purchase.

Some helpful tips for shopping for your perfect handbag:

  1. Know what you need to carry (work file, computer, text book, water bottle, kid crap, etc)
  2. Do not be afraid of color, any solid color can act as a neutral!
  3. Try out the bag: put your things in it before committing.
  4. Ask lots of questions; How durable is this brand? How will the leather hold up?
  5. Make sure the bag is proportional to your frame.

Other things to think about:

  • Washed leathers, which are softer and more pliable, will wear faster.
  • Examine the straps. The way they are secured to the body of the bag makes a difference (especially in terms of how much weight the bag can hold.)
  • Bright linings are a good thing, they help you see all the goodies that fall to the bottom of your bag.

Good luck finding that perfect bag! Stop in, we have a ton to choose from and are more than happy to help you try as many styles as possible before you commit!

A Girl Can Dream (Dream 1, Act 1)

In case I haven’t mentioned it before, I work in a very dangerous environment. Beautiful, but dangerous. I have to look at gorgeous things all day— boohoo, right? Well, a girl’s gotta eat, so trying on beautiful shoes and jewelry, petting buttery bags, and having to go without can be a little rough. Enough with the sad sackery, I love every minute of it, because I get to play dress up— for myself, and all of you guys!
It’s pretty easy to get lost in Dreamland, especially when exquisite works of wearable art come in, like “Recess” from Cydwoq, which came in just the other day. And so begins a new series on the blog, called “A Girl Can Dream,” in which I share my dress up dreams with you!
I was struck by how uniquely versatile these shoes are; brown, short heel, neither dressy nor particularly casual, and yet breathtaking. Here’s how I would dress them down, perhaps for a sunny Sunday brunch or outdoor concert:

A pair of light wash, great-fitting jeans, loose, printed top, and finished off with some subtly stunning accessories like a Christopher Kon hobo bag, Minoux necklace (What? I’m addicted okay?) and some red socks peeking out from the jean cuffs.

This is gonna be fun!
What occasion would you wear the Recess for?

Sally

Spring Colors: Coral

While we’re on the Happy Train to Springtown, (having already discussed the benefits of wearing sunny yellows) let’s stop and consider coral, which is showing it’s gorgeous face all over the spring runways this year.

This color (any combo of bright and juicy reds, pinks, and oranges) looks amazing on anyone, and if the coral shades themselves weren’t enough to add a little spring in your step. As an added bonus, this punchy shade looks fantastic with the golden yellow we showcased previously- be bold!

We’ve got more shades of the season coming up to delete your sadface, so be sure and check back soon!

12 Days of Christmas: Day 5

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me…a beautiful Christopher Kon bag. Say what? That’s not how the song goes. Well that’s what I want, as would any fashion forward lady. What am I going to do with five golden rings? A bag now that is a gift that I can adapt to my life, the gift that will constantly remind me of the lovely giver who thought of me this holiday season. A bag is where I can fashionably store all of my daily necessities. Gold rings may have been a great gift of the past, but surely ladies of today want a gift they can use!

Come back tomorrow as we work our way into the rest of the song, I mean gifting suggestions!
