Liv a Little

You all know how much I like a versatile shoe! And a colorful shoe… and well, I guess just shoes. And I’m a strong believer that a colorful shoe is a versatile shoe!
A shoe that can dress up or down, or can be worn a variety of different ways, isn’t reserved for black and brown. And lucky for us, the perfect example of this came in the other day; meet the Fly London “Liv!”
This sunny, vintage-inspired shoe is wonderful for spring, and looks just as cute dressed down for a daytime picnic as it does with a dazzling dress, ready for an evening party or concert! Check it out:

Throw on your favorite jeans and a feminine top with these comfy almost-flats, and you’re ready to seize the day!
“Lucy Crossbody” bag from Shiraleah, Small Bow Hoop Earrings from Minoux, Rotary Phone Circle Scarf from Snoozer Loser.

And then, when it’s time to check out that new bar for happy hour, slip on a fun  printed dress, your new favorite flats, some fun jewelry, and add a sleek clutch in a contrasting color (and tights if it’s chilly!)
Earrings and necklace from Jesseca Anne Jewelry, “Lauren” clutch/wallet from Hobo, nylon tights from Happy Socks.

It just goes to show ya that whether you’re getting gussied up, or gussying way down, a fun shoe can do the job in style!

Spring Colors: Aqua

In honor of the gorgeous blue sky out there today, I would like to shed some light on another stunning spring shade: aqua blue. From a cool, watery blue, to something richer like turquoise, or with a hint of green, this color scheme screams sunny days, and looks good on any complexion.
Have a look:

If you’re at all nervous about integrating this bright shade into your wardrobe, start small with, say, a pair of turquoise earrings or necklace, then step it up by pairing a bright blue shoe with a gauzy white dress. When you’re ready to really stand out, try an aqua colored dress (maybe with that golden yellow cardigan?)

It’s okay to be blue, but just on the outside!

xoxo,
Sally

Spring Colors: Coral

While we’re on the Happy Train to Springtown, (having already discussed the benefits of wearing sunny yellows) let’s stop and consider coral, which is showing it’s gorgeous face all over the spring runways this year.

This color (any combo of bright and juicy reds, pinks, and oranges) looks amazing on anyone, and if the coral shades themselves weren’t enough to add a little spring in your step. As an added bonus, this punchy shade looks fantastic with the golden yellow we showcased previously- be bold!

We’ve got more shades of the season coming up to delete your sadface, so be sure and check back soon!

Spring Colors: Goldenrod

Though technically spring, we Portlanders know that one day of sunshine doesn’t allude to months of nothing but nice days. One day of sandal weather leads to three of of rain boot weather, and so on and so forth until July. Don’t let the emotional rollercoaster getcha down— spring can be a state of mind, too!
The key here is to trick your brain and rise above the weather, and (aside from lots of Vitamin D and fresh produce) you can do so by adorning yourself in the colors of the season. This is the part where I would tell you to “banish the black” or whatever, but let’s be realistic instead, k? I will amend this to say wear as little black as humanly possible. Perhaps challenge yourself to go several days without wearing black, or perhaps only accessorizing with it. The thing about black (versatile as the shade may be) is that it ends up feeling heavy, and it drags down your happy outfit, so just experiment with ditching the goth staple. How’s that sound?
Let’s start with one of my favorite colors ever, which just so happens to be all the rage this spring: goldenrod yellow.

Pick a shade that works for you, anywhere between pale yellow and something a bit richer and mustardy. If this cheerful shade seems a little overwhelming for you, start with a smaller take on the shade, like your shoes or bag. If and when you warm up to the idea, try a happy top or dress. Can’t you feel the spring sun already?

Check back soon for another happy spring color that’ll keep you from getting the sads!

Confession Time

My name is Sally, and I don’t know how to layer. As in, clothes. Yes, I am living through my second winter as a Portland resident, but am often caught dressed inappropriately (as in, right now.) I know that to survive Portland’s sometimes-unpredictable weather, one must be able to wear layers of clothing as to function and not freeze. But this concept is somewhat beyond me. As a gal who enjoys her fashion, I have never been able to compromise the outfits that I would “rather” wear with the ones I “should” wear… at least, not without looking and feeling like a marshmallow.

But after a quick study of all the fashion-forward Portlanders during a recent storm, I think I’m finally getting the hang of it (though I am currently also wearing a tank top… so sue me!)

Tell me what you think:

This is a close proximity to what I wore to happy hour this weekend. Two cute tops, two pieces of outerwear, pants (what a concept!) visible socks with ankle booties (my latest sartorial obsession,) and all nature of knit accessories.
I didn’t feel too bulky, yet I didn’t freeze. This is how we learn!

NUCLEAR WINTER?!

I think we can all agree by now that we’re better off listening to the voices in our heads than the weatherman on TV these days, but Portland is allegedly going to get between 0 inches and 1 foot of snow “sometime” this week “maybe”, so why not be prepared?

pedX and Manifesto both have some goodies in stock necessary to your survival (whether it snows or not.)
