Memories of You

I am short. Very short. I like to say I’m 5 feet tall, but alas, age and horrible posture have left their mark, and I don’t think I’m 5 feet any longer (shhh, don’t tell my kids.) So with my one son quite a bit taller than me, I’ve decided I need to jack myself up. Comfort is a necessity as I refuse to wear anything that makes me hobble, but ahhh, there’s that wedge- specifically Seychelles “Memories of You,” whose whisper has grown louder ever since they graced our store.
With a 4.5 inch heel I began to shy away, but the toe is elevated with an inch platform so I wouldn’t be standing on tippy-toes. Hmmm, could I walk- nay, strut- without falling? Cause really, what’s the point of a heel if you can’t strut your stuff? Deviating from my shoe comfort zone, I slipped them on and — so comfortable; strut secured.

I’m ditching my step stool and only wearing these!

There are two kinds of people in this world: the kind who overpack and the kind who don’t. As the only member of my family who works at a shoe store, my kin are always shocked to find that, for every trip, I have only packed two or three pairs of shoes— they have all managed to find room for at least five! Say what?! There’s no place I can image going for a week or less that requires so many! If you’ve got the room and the desire and the arm strength to carry them all with you… I never have any of those things, so I make sure they all go with the same pairs of shoes! Now is not the time to be indecisive, you guys! Pick your favorite outfits and rock em!

You need a flat shoe or sandal, comfy enough to see the sights by foot, a dressy shoe for all the schmancy places you might end up, and a ~wild card~ that pair that you just can’t bear to live without while you are gone because WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN?!*
The same goes for your bags: you need an all-day-goes-with-everything one and a schmancy one. Boom boom, look at all that room! All the better to fill it with snow globes for your coworkers, my dear.

Primary Colors!

Remember in pre-school when the only colors that mattered were the primary colors? Red, yellow and blue, do we really need to ask for more? I think that we should all get back to our roots! I mean really, how great are red, blue and yellow? The new Seychelles Hey There sandal said exactly that to me: “Hey there Marika, I need you to take me home and love me.” So I did just that.* The soft blue of the leather reminds me of lazy days under clear summer skies and the wooden heel is so natural and refreshing. The best thing about these shoes is that they lend well to being paired with bright colors! I chose to pair them with brightly printed Orla Kiely accessories and an adorable sunhat by Coal. What would you pair them with?

There’s no doubt that I love colorful outfits— A LOT— but my eclectic style does account for some darker days (and I mean that literally.) Some days, it’s a blackout, and even the brightest days will not take that away from me. I call the look “Summertime Goth,” even though it really makes me feel more like an Old Hollywood movie star. Just thought I’d share it with you!
The key to this lightless look is to show a little skin so the look doesn’t get too heavy, so I paired some amazing peekaboo wedges (“Bintan” by Fiel) with a less-is-more romper. Add a black bag, naturally (the bag is Latico, the wallet is Hobo) and top off the whole witchy look with dark sunglasses and a floppy hat (this one is Coal) to maintain some semblance of privacy. Add some earrings (these leafy lovelies are Towne + Reese) and red gloss for a pop- girl’s gotta have a little flare, after all! And for heaven’s sake, do NOT forget sunscreen; it fits in the purse!

I love me some outrageous shoes, don’t get me wrong, but there’s something to be said for the versatility of a simple shoe. The possibilities are literally endless. That’s what I love about the “Up and Away” sandal from Gentle Souls. First of all they’re black, so HELLO, and they are also just clean and modern. Beat that! I love using a minimal, neutral shoe as a foundation for a colorful outfit.
Here’s a dream look of mine:

The black, utilitarian sandals provide the perfect base to let this colorful outfit shine through!
Add some bright accessories (necklace and ring, Towne + Reese, scarf by Snoozer Loser) and you’re ready to go!

Match! Or, like, don't!

Whether you’re the matchy-matchy type or like to go out on a limb with your outfits, I totally dig it. My style is constantly changing, the only constant is COLOR. I’m a fan (just in case you didn’t notice!) Some days, there’s a theme, and a color scheme, and all that good stuff. Sometimes, there is little or no rhyme to my reason. I like it that way. Take this outfit for example- you can either work your shoes into the same color scheme of the outfit (and the earrings too; see the same deco shape?) or mix it up a bit with another color shoe (red and yellow is a favorite color combo of mine.)

What do you guys think of these pairings? Would you dare?

It’s Support Teen Lit day today, and how could I possibly think about any other book other than Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret? I didn’t have any kids my age in my neighborhood and spent the long summer days reading at the neighborhood pool. I fully understood Margaret’s angst and desperation to fit in and be comfortable in her own skin. And I watched the high school girls lounging about and looking oh so cool and couldn’t wait to be their age. Cause all that awkwardness and fear would just magically disappear, right? I’d feel at ease and happy - my only real problem, which boy would I say yes to dating? My days would be filled with shopping for fabulous clothes and shoes to wear to all the parties I would be going to, playing spin the bottle and having the time of my life! Everything would be perfect in high school … I just knew it.

Nope, not the newspaper! It’s the “Kegan” from Miz Mooz! I have fallen head over ~~heels~~ platforms for these retro flatforms, the only trouble now is deciding which to get: red or black? I have a vision (okay, okay, several visions) of wearing a simple outfit to really let the shoes pop and then, it’s a matter of whether or not to embrace the 50s pinup babe, or style these in a more modern way… how would I ever choose!?

Here’s two fun ideas for how to wear these lovely Miz Mooz!

When you need to vamp it up, try pairing the Kegan with a dress that has a 50s vibe- very Greaser in a good way! A red bag (this one is by Latico) and vintage-inspired earrings (Jesseca Anne Jewerly, shown here) add the finishing touch. Now you’re ready to paint the town- well, you know!

And if you wanted to try a sharp daytime look, you could play with wearing the red Kegan with a clean, all-black outfit to really highlight to shoe. A sleek clutch (“Lauren” from Hobo) and geometric necklace (this one is from Minoux) add to this polished look. Maybe a little red lipstick would tie everything together?

Look, all I know about these two is that they met in court. Then I stopped asking. But I assume they like shoes, because DUH. They live in undisclosed parts of northeast Portland. Other than that, they remain a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, and packaged up in a totally cute bag.

Looking to spice up your wardrobe? Try a touch of red, you’ll be glad that you did!
You can wear it with any other color in the spectrum (okay, okay, maybe skip dark green, but that’s only because Christmas ruined it for everyone.) Here’s a sampler platter of some of my favorite fiery accessories:
